SETI makes breakthrough in single chip germicidal UV LED

Tue, 09/21/2010 - 08:56 — jasminezhuang

Sensor Electronic Technology, Inc. (SETI) has shifted the power of UV LEDs operating in the germicidal wavelength range from 30 mW up to 100 mW.

At present, this level of single chip performance is not yet available in SETI's production LEDs, high power UV LED lamps are available under the UVCLEAN® trademark with germicidal powers up to 50 mW.

SETI demonstrated disinfection in an "on demand" drinking water system using 30mW LED lamps . As Remis Gaska, President and CEO of SETI noted, "High power UV LEDs are essential to achieve the level of disinfection required in point-of-use and point-of-entry water treatment systems. This ongoing development of large area high power UV LEDs will help to reduce the price per milliwatt and allow UV LEDs to enter cost sensitive disinfection markets."

It's reported that SETI will be presenting all the latest data on its high power single chip LEDs at the International Workshop on Nitrides (IWN) in Tampa, Florida, USA on September 19th – 24th.

Microchip designed new Digital LED Lighting Development Kit

Tue, 09/28/2010 - 10:37 — jasminezhuang

Microchip Technology Inc. has designed its Digital LED Lighting Development Kit, which enables designers to quickly leverage the capabilities and performance of the dsPIC33 'GS' series of Digital Signal Controllers (DSCs) to develop LED lighting products.

The dsPIC33 'GS' DSC and this reference design allow developers to create a 100% digitally controlled ballast function, while including advanced features such as dimming and color hue control.

The dsPIC33 'GS' DSCs can support an entire system implementation for LED lighting products, including power-conversion circuits, such as AC-to-DC and DC-to-DC conversion, along with functions such as Power Factor Correction (PFC), which are necessary for a complete product and lower the overall system cost.

With the help of the digital-power techniques in this reference design and the dsPIC33 'GS' series of DSCs, you can benefit: Reduced System Cost via higher integration, higher Efficiency using digital-control techniques ,flexible and reusable designs and advanced features implemented in software.

Market adoption of LED lighting addressed at SIL Europe conference

The strategies and technologies that will lead to the wider adoption of LED-based solid-state lighting will be extensively discussed at next week’s Strategies in Light Europe conference.

Final preparations are underway for the inaugural Strategies in Light Europe conference, which takes place next week in Frankfurt, Germany. A top-quality line-up of speakers will address the central theme "Accelerating the Market Adoption of LED Lighting."

The Keynote Session on Monday September 27th features three high-profile speakers, starting with Martin Goetzeler, president & CEO of OSRAM GmbH who will speak on the subject of “Shaping the Future of Light.” Next, Jan Denneman, president of the European Lamp Companies Federation (ELC), will describe European Lighting Industry efforts to promote quality LED lighting. Also, John Magan, Deputy Head of Photonics Unit G5 in the European Commission, will explain the role of solid-state lighting in the Digital Agenda for Europe.

The ELC is one of the conference’s Supporting Organizations, along with CELMA and the Lighting Association. On the second day of the conference, Peter Besting will speak on behalf of CELMA and ELC, presenting information on LED lamps and modules in relation to EU regulations. And in the “Building the Perfect Luminaire” workshop on Monday, Steffen Holtz will discuss the CELMA Guide to LED Luminaire Design. A second workshop on Monday will discuss Standards relating to LED performance and safety.

Although much of the conference will have a European theme, Wu Ling of the China SSL Alliance will present a welcome perspective on China’s strategies in relation to solid-state lighting.

Elsewhere in the main program, Mike Simpson of Philips Lighting UK will discuss how the requirements of lighting designers and specifiers are being met by LED lighting. Speakers from GE Lighting, Osram and Lemnis Lighting will discuss the market impact of LED modules and LED retrofit lamps.

Drivers, optics, AC-LEDs, reliability and OLEDs will all be discussed in relation to their impact on the LED lighting market. Other speakers will address linear LED lighting, spot- and down-lighting, and architectural lighting. Uwe Hock of Sharp Microelectronics Europe will describe how technology developed for LCD backlighting can be applied to general lighting.

We are very grateful for the participation of all our speakers; summaries of all the talks and workshops are listed on the SIL Europe conference program page.

We are also grateful to our sponsors (in alphabetical order): Avago Technologies, Epistar, GE Lighting, GrafTech International, Lynk Labs, Osram Opto Semiconductors, Recom Electronic GmbH, Sharp Microelectronics Europe, and Underwriters Laboratories. These and more than 30 other companies are taking part in the exhibit adjacent to the conference sessions.

Next year’s Strategies in Light Europe event will take place on October 3-5, 2011 in Milan, Italy.
