Benefits of LED Lights Replacement

This article talks about the benefits of LED lights compared with traditional lights such as incandecent and fluorescent lights. The advantages of LED lighting is not only it can save the electricity bills, but also it can save replacement and mantenence cost since it has much longer lifespan.

The foreseeable of home lighting will very soon be the vast distributed adopting and utilize of green energy-saving LED lights. Though the current market for  LED lights products is mainly  geared towards supporters and the pros, the upsides of LED lighting  will raise demand for more cost-effective LED lights. SSL (Solid-State-Lighting) is an interesting field and its been forecasted, that soon, energy-saving LED lighting products are going to be reliable and affordable sufficiently  to replace incandescent and fluorecent lights for common use in our homes, in public places, in car parking lots, in street lights, in outdoor signs, in super markets, in shopping malls and offices.

The working lifespan of current LED lamps is 100,000 hours theoretically. This will be more than 10  years of continuing running, or in another caculation, say 33.3% operation (that is 8 hours per day), 34 years of lifespan. The long operational life of an LED light is great advantage compared to an incandescent bulb or a fluorescent tube, which is approximately 4000-6000 hours.

When it comes to cost, it seems a little unfair to LED lights. Most people like to carry out some 1 on 1 comparison between the cost of LED lights and  traditional lights such as incandescents, fluorescents and halogen lamps. With incandescent lamps, the true and hidden cost is the electricity bills and the maintenance fee (including the replacement bulbs and the labour fee). When comes to the commercial sector, for example, for shopping malls, car parks, office buildings and highrises, maintenance costs for replacing the light bulbs or light  tubes, can be significant. While LED lights here could be a perfect solution.

As soon as developed efficiently, an LED circuit will probably come to 70-80% efficiency, that indicates 70-80% of the energy has been converted to light rather than other forms of energy such as heat.  While for incandescent bulbs, only 10- 20% of  electricity is used to generate light, at the same time, 80-90% of electric power has been wasted to generate heat. Take a simple example, say if I light up my room with a 100 Watt incandescent bulb (8 hours per day), and the electrical fee is 10cents/kilowatt hour,  then for 1 year, my electrical cost for this bulb would be $29 expense, but $23-$26 of this $29 will be spent  to heat the room, only $3-$6 is actually devoted to light the room. And if an efficient LED light is used, the energy fee would be only about $9-$11 yearly – 60%-70% saving on electricity  each year. Please have in mind that the savings on maintenance and replacements during the next years has not been counted yet.

Although LED lighting hold superb advantages compared to traditional lighting. The critical constraint to the wide adoption of LED lighting is still  the present relative high cost of LED lamps as the initial investment. Despite the fact the price is constantly going down, LED lamps are still expensive. Usually, a 3W LED globe bulb, replacement of a 25 watt incandescent, costs around $40. Despite the fact that LEDs are expensive, the initial cost will be paid back in long term, by saving utility and mantenance costs. The best value comes from commercial applications where maintenance and replacement costs are costly.

It is predicted that as the new improvements of LED technologies comming, there  will be progressively more LED light adoptions in residential lighting applications. In fact, LED technology has been explored and developed for several decades but only a few years ago, as the white light LEDs were developed, LED lighting began pratical for illumination. And in these short few years, a fast rising industry has being formed. This could also be a proof that LED lighting holds a very promising future. And this future won’t be long.

The Benefit of LED Tubes Replacement

Back to 3 or 4 years ago, if someone talked about LED tubes, we may probably have no idea what it is about. But now, when we look around, we could probably see that LED light tubes have become a very hot topic and have been becoming more and more popular year by year or even day by day. The traditional fluorescent lights are widely and typically used in different lighting applications such as industrial lighting, warehouse lighting, commercial lighting, office lighting and residential lighting etc. But nowadays, it seems the moment to consider about replacing them with LED light tubes.

LED or referred to as Light Emitting Diode is environment friendly as they generate light by the movement of electrons in the diode. Comparing with LED, florescent lights waste most of energy to produce heat which are definitely no good to our environment. A typical LED light tube may include hundreds of LEDs. The actual number of LEDs depends on the size of the tube or the illumination requirements.

There area a great deal of positive aspects that drive people to try and make use of tube LEDs. For example:

- Can you imagine how much heat a fluorescent tube light can produce? Have you heard about the complaint made by those people who have to sit or work underneath or near fluorescent tube lights – haven’t mentioned that some of them claimed to suffer from frequent head aches. Not like the conventional fluorescent lights LEDs will not produce much of heat and they would not cause people any head aches. LED lights can be installed wherever you want them to be, living rooms, bedrooms, halls, buses, trains, boats, cabinets, etc. And of course, you may have probably notice there are some Christmas lights and curtain lights that are made of LED lights.

- LED tubes consume 60-70% less energy when in comparison with the fluorescent tubes. Typically, a 20W fluorescent tube can be replaced by a 8-10W LED tube; a 40W fluorescent tube can be replace by a 15-18W LED tube; a 60W fluorescent tube can be replaced by a 24-26W tube LED. And please keep in mind that if taking the ballast and starter into account, the tube LEDs can save even more energy as unlike fluorescent tubes, LED light tubes do not need any ballast and starter.

- LED tubes are available in different sizes and colors (in a more technical way of description, it means color temperature). Currently, LED tubes follow the traditional design of traditional fluorescent tubes (T5, T10, T10, T12 etc). The reason for that is to allow direct replacement of the existing fluorescents without extra retrofit cost by replacing the whole lighting fitting. As a result, the commonly obtainable sizes of LED tubes (take T8 and T10 for example) are 2 feet (600mm), 3 feet (600mm), 4 feet (1200mm) and 5 feet (1500mm) and 8 feet (2400mm). Another advantage it should be looked at is the diverse colors that LED lights can produce. Back in the fluorescent tube ages, the light color of a fluorescent tube can not be chosen. But now, with LED fluorescent tubes, the light color can be cold white, pure white, natural white, warm white, red, green, blue, yellow etc, extremely flexible and user-friendly.

- LEDs have much longer lifespan when compared with other lights. Theoretically LEDs’ lifespan can be as long as 50,000 to 100,000 hours. Of course, when it comes to a lighting fixture, the lifespan is not only about the LEDs, but also related to all other electronic components of the lighting fixture. However, this is the way how LED tubes can help to save your maintenance bills for failed lights replacement.

Despite the fact that there is variety of advantage of LED tube replacement, consumers tend to concern about the downsides. Below would be some of the most concerned drawbacks of LED light tubes:

- One of the major problems (and probably the biggest one) that bother the consumers is its price. LED tube lights are much more costly when in comparison with the fluorescent tubes and incandescent bulbs. The market prices normally vary from $50 to $100. However, considering the LED tubes can work for an prolonged time, the cost is acceptable, especially to those commercial applications that need long-time running.

- Retrofit work could be another issue which is concerned, as you may need to reset the electrical configuration in order to let the tubes work properly. The conventional fluorescent tubes require ballasts and starters which are not needed for the LED tubes. Therefore, ballasts and starters will be removed when installing LED tubes. This means a little extra rewiring work.

To summarize, the pros of utilizing LED tubes are considerably much more when compared with its cons. Its worth to have a try of tube LED replacement.
