Long Island of America Replaces Streetlights with LED

Long Island, Smithtown in America is replacing over 10 percent of its streetlights with LED.

According to Traffic Safety Director Mitchell Crowley, who is overseeing the project, the new lights, paid for with federal stimulus money through a grant of more than $1 million, will convert about 1,500 of the town's 11,600 streetlights to LED.

So far, the town has installed about 200 light fixtures. The switch is expected to save about $225,000 a year or $2.2 million over the fixtures' 10-year life.
The Long Island Power Authority said LED streetlights can use 50 to 70 percent less energy and last three to five times longer than high-pressure sodium lamps.
Additionally, Boston and Los Angeles have installed LED lights and other communities have plans to make the change.

Apart from Long Island, some towns are converting to induction lights, which are similar to fluorescent lights and also cost less to use than traditional lighting.

Chinese Government Publishes the Demonstration Project Bid Award list of Solid State Lighting Applications, Raising Expectations for Its LED Domestic Market

The Chinese central government has recently held a large-scale open bidding for LED lighting products. The National Development and Reform Commission, Ministry of Housing, and Urban-Rural Development Commission and Ministry of Transport conducted the tender evaluation together and published the bid award list on November 24th, 2010.





LEDinside, the LED research division under Trendforce, realizes that 28 LED lighting companies out of 94 bidding industry players have become bid winners. Bid products include LED street/tunnel lamps, LED down lights, reflector type self-ballasted LED lights (MR and PAR series). Most bid winners are China's local LED manufacturers, but the LEDs they adopt require high specifications, so Cree is undoubtedly the biggest winner. As the LED demand increases with the progress of the demonstration projects, Taiwan LED manufacturers can have an opportunity to enter the supply chain.

The award criteria emphasize the product quality, price and comprehensive strength of the manufacturer. LEDinside thinks that the technical award criteria require high specifications and quality of the LED lighting product. Apart from the safety requirement for lighting fixtures, the initial luminous flux, luminous maintenance factor and power factor also have related criteria respectively. Thus, the bid winners have actually obtained the endorsement and support from the government, which will immensely help expand the mainland market in the future.


According to LEDinside’s analyst, the bidding puts certain scale limitations on the demonstration projects applied by governmental units. For example, no less than 5000 indoor LED lighting products must be applied into the construction/renovation project of architectural lighting; no less than 500 LED street/tunnel lamps must be applied into the construction/renovation project of secondary road, branch road or tunnel lighting. Besides, each unit will release orders totaled at least 3 million RMB. As more and more government units will apply for the demonstration projects based on the award criteria, the LED industry development has a bright version in the near future.

China new energy efficiency standard will bring more non-compliant products to cut price

On December 1,  China new flat-panel TV energy efficiency standards was carried out, which contained three level standards: level one for most efficient products; level two for products that meet the lowest requirements for being labeled energy-efficiency products; and level three for products meeting the minimum requirements for being allowed on the market. It’s estimated that would stimulate more price-cut promotion on products that did not meet the standard.

When the new standards were first reported in the end of June, venders started cleaning their inventories in the next five months. So until recently, venders should have clean out their most inventories. Also, this meant that a higher threshold in terms of cost and technology, and small- to medium-size players would not have advantage from their low prices, with the first-tier vendors focusing on higher efficiency products.

At present, First-tier vendors focused on 46- and 47-inch models, while local vendors focused on 32-, 40- and 42-inch models. Local brands had seen prices of their 32-inch LED-backlit TVs drop below CNY2, 500, and prices of popular LED-backlit models had dropped by around 20%. Prices for 40- and 42-inch models had dropped below CNY5,000, and some models from China vendors had dropped to as low as CNY4,000.

SIL Europe 2010: EU regulations on lamps and modules


Representing CELMA and ELC, Peter Besting of Panasonic Electric Works Vossloh Schwabe GmbH spoke at Strategies in Light Europe 2010 about modules and lamps in relation to EU regulations.

ELC and CELMA are providing input on quality requirements to the Commission as it prepares part 2 of the EcoDesign Regulations. The current EU Regulation 244/2009 (EcoDesign part 1) is restricted to non-directional lamps. The recommendation is to include LED modules in part 2, and to require efficacy >50 lm/W in 2012, increasing to >60 lm/W by 2015.

Part 2 will also include directional lamps, and the industry has already agreed and defined minimum output values for different lamp types, independent of the light-source technology.

Besting explained that consumers want a choice of LED lamps and modules, and setting minimum quality levels will guarantee basic performance and avoid frustration and disappointment. However, the industry will also supply top-quality products for applications where a high price is justified.

“International standards allow comparison and evaluation,” said Besting. “Regulation should ensure a minimum quality level, but should also leave sufficient space for differentiation in view of different application/usage and competitiveness.”

Epistar enables 162 lm/W white LED for lighting applications

LED maker Epistar has demonstrated R&D results for a high-voltage (HV) LED chip that enables cold-white (5000K) LEDs to reach 162 lm/W.

The chip is described as a monolithically-integrated, DC multiple-array chip LED for high-voltage applications. Epistar expects the product to reach the mainstream in general lighting applications.

The luminous efficacy of 162 lm/W was achieved for a drive current of 20 mA and voltage of 47V, corresponding to 0.94W power consumption. Under these conditions, the 45-mil (1.1x1.1 mm) chip produced 152 lm (see graph).

Epistar says that the HV-LED has advantages of lower power consumption compared with traditional LEDs, as well as higher wall-plug efficiency, because of its robust new high-voltage chip design. The flexibility of voltage and current adjustment of HV-LED can simplify the LED package and circuit design, and its overall efficiency is therefore enhanced, the company says.


SMASH project reports progress

The SMASH project has published its second newsletter. SMASH aims to establish disruptive approaches to fabricating LEDs that exploit nano-structured materials to realize high-efficiency and low-cost devices. These will be achieved by epitaxial growth of LED structures on ultra-low-defect nano-structured templates and by the development of LEDs based on nano-rod emitters. These approaches will have large impact on manufacturing costs because they enable growth on large-area, low-cost substrates such as silicon.

One crucial step over the past 6 months has been the demonstration of position-controlled growth of n-face GaN nanorods by MOVPE. This work was performed by Osram Opto Semiconductors in close collaboration with the Technical University Braunschweig.

Verticle launches first hexagonal LED chip

Verticle Inc of Dublin, CA, USA, has announced what it claims is the first hexagonal-shaped LED chip, according to an article on the Semiconductor Today website. The Honeycomb LED Chip is a vertically-structured InGaN-based blue LED chip developed especially for high-power applications. CEO Mike (M.C.) Yoo believes that, compared with conventional square- or rectangular-type LEDs, a hexagonal LED chip yields multiple benefits regarding cost, light output efficiency, and beam profile.


Sumitomo Electric develops 6-inch GaN substrates

Sumitomo Electric Industries has developed the world's first 6-inch-diameter GaN (gallium nitride) substrates to be used for white LEDs. According to a Japan Corporate News Network article.

Previously, the company produced 2-inch GaN substrates for blue-violet lasers, which enabled production of the first Blu-ray DVD players. Sumitomo Electric began large-scale production of 2-inch GaN substrates for use in white LEDs, and has also been developing larger-diameter GaN substrates.

The front face of the newly developed 6in GaN substrates is a polarized c-plane. Sumitomo Electric has ongoing development efforts to bring this material into large scale production and expects that these materials will find widespread use for both white LEDs and power devices.

Researchers at National Tsing-Hua University (Hsinchu, Taiwan) have developed a new recipe for a phosphor-free white LEDs, according to an article on OptoIQ. The devices use GaN nanorod arrays on silicon (Si) substrates as a template for growing strain-free InGaN/GaN nanorod heterostructures that eliminate piezoelectric polarization effects.

ElectroIQ has an interview with Jan Vardaman, president of TechSearch International. Speaking at the MEPTEC Semiconductor Packaging Roadmaps conference (Santa Clara, CA on Nov 10), Vardaman said that there is room for improvement in LED packaging and assembly.

In this podcast interview with Debra Vogler, senior technical editor, Vardaman discusses sapphire and SiC substrates, as well as the various singulation methods currently in use by LED manufacturers. Other subjects for discussion include the size of substrate wafers, and standards for LED manufacturing.


Blue semipolar GaN LEDs

Researchers at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) and Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation (Ibaraki, Japan) have developed a backside-roughening technique for blue semipolar gallium-nitride (GaN)-based LEDs. This makes the devices comparable to commercial wurtzite c-plane LEDs in terms of both performance and manufacturing methods, according to an article on the OptoIQ website.

SETI makes breakthrough in single chip germicidal UV LED

Sensor Electronic Technology, Inc. (SETI) has shifted the power of UV LEDs operating in the germicidal wavelength range from 30 mW up to 100 mW.

At present, this level of single chip performance is not yet available in SETI's production LEDs, high power UV LED lamps are available under the UVCLEAN® trademark with germicidal powers up to 50 mW.

SETI demonstrated disinfection in an "on demand" drinking water system using 30mW LED lamps . As Remis Gaska, President and CEO of SETI noted, "High power UV LEDs are essential to achieve the level of disinfection required in point-of-use and point-of-entry water treatment systems. This ongoing development of large area high power UV LEDs will help to reduce the price per milliwatt and allow UV LEDs to enter cost sensitive disinfection markets."

It's reported that SETI will be presenting all the latest data on its high power single chip LEDs at the International Workshop on Nitrides (IWN) in Tampa, Florida, USA on September 19th – 24th.
